Prof.Dr. Semra Demokan (MSc, PhD) is a Principle Investigator, a member of ERASMUS commission and Head of Division of Experimental and Molecular Oncology and at Istanbul University, Oncology Institute, in Istanbul, Turkey. She has research experience more than 20 years, including a postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine at Head and Neck Cancer Division under mentorship of Drs. Joseph A. Califano, Wayne Koch, and David Sidransky for two years. She works on the discovery of epigenetic biomarkers in the early detection, screening and monitoring cancer. Dr. Demokan has published more than 40 publications in prestigious journals with more 500 citations (only SCI, h-index: 13) and received national and international awards including AACR-Aflac-Scholar-in-Training Award, AACR-NCI Inetrnational Investigator Oppurtunity and “The Best Poster Presentation Award” in 7th European Congress on Head and Neck Oncology (ECHNO), “3rd Best Poster Presentation Award” VII. International Congress of Molecular Medicine, “Prof. Dr. Emin Kansu Best Oral Presentation Award” 2nd Basic Oncology, “First Prize Award” in Basic Oncology Research. She has been principal investigator in several national studies some of which are funded by the most prominent scientific funding agency of Turkey, TUBITAK. She founded the PhD program in Experimental and Molecular Oncology. In fact that, she led the establishment of The Basic Oncology Society as a founder member. Dr. Demokan obtained her B.S in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Bogazici University, master’s and doctorate degree in Oncological Biology and Immunology, Basic Oncology, both from Istanbul University, Oncology Institute. She is fluent in Turkish (mother tongue) and English.
